Happy Puthandu , also known as Tamil New Year , is a festival celebrated with great fervour by the Tamil community in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and other parts of the world where Tamil diaspora reside. Usually it falls on April 14 each year, marking the beginning of the Tamil calendar month of Chithirai.
It is a time of renewal, hope, and positivity, where people do activities to kickstart the new year on a great note. From people cleaning their homes to people decorating them traditional kolam designs, people celebrate the new year with an optimistic mindset.
On the day of Puthandu, people also wake up early to witness the "Kanni," a special sight arranged in homes. The Kanni consists of auspicious items like fruits, flowers, gold or silver jewelry, betel leaves, and nuts, arranged beautifully on a tray. It is believed that viewing the Kanni first thing in the morning brings luck and prosperity for the year ahead.
Besides, people also prepare a host of delicious dishes like mango pachadi, vadai, payasam and sambar. The feast is not just a culinary delight, but also symbolises the spirit of togetherness and sharing.
