Indoor Air

This program was established to reduce exposure to indoor air contaminants including mold and mildew. Through this program, Sarasota County has a full-time environmental health specialist who provides advice and expertise about how to manage indoor air problems in residences, schools, health care, and public facilities. Our highest priority is given to helping solve health problems when a physician suspects that indoor air quality may be a contributing factor.

Mold and Mildew

All too common in our humid Florida climate, mold and mildew can present health problems in indoor environments.

Radon Testing

Trained specialists serve as a technical resource to the public on the health effects of radon.

Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless, tasteless, radioactive gas produced from the radioactive decay of radium found in most soils and earthen construction materials. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. after smoking, and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that radon is responsible for more than 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year. Data collected by the Florida Department of Health from state-certified professionals indicates that 1 in 5 Florida residences have elevated radon levels. The only way to know the radon levels in your home is to have it tested.
